"The reason I'm sitting here with you today—not on IV chemotherapy—is because of an NGS test."
It's a powerful statement, and one that immediately captures the heart of Laura Lummer's story.
Laura is a two-time breast cancer survivor, Certified Terrain Advocate, Advanced Integrative Metabolic Specialist, and breast cancer recovery coach. After successfully completing treatment for Stage II breast cancer, she was later diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Today, more than five years later, she continues to thrive by combining conventional cancer treatment with evidence-informed metabolic and lifestyle strategies.
During a recent MTIH Community Conversation, Laura shared the lessons she has learned through her own journey—and the message she hopes every patient hears:
Become the CEO of your health.
That doesn't mean becoming your own doctor. It means becoming an informed partner in your care by asking questions, understanding your options, and building a healthcare team that works together on your behalf.
Here are three of the biggest takeaways from her conversation.
1. Get the Data Before You Make Decisions
One of Laura's most important messages is simple:
Don't guess. Test.
Every person's cancer is different, and every person's body responds differently to treatment. The more information you and your healthcare team have, the more personalized your care can become.
Laura shared how an NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) test changed the course of her own treatment.
When one of her lymph nodes began showing signs of progression, her oncologist recommended IV chemotherapy. Before moving forward, Laura asked if there was additional testing that could provide more information.
The NGS test analyzed the genetics of her tumor and identified a specific mutation with an available targeted therapy.
Instead of immediately beginning IV chemotherapy, she and her oncologist were able to choose a targeted treatment that matched the biology of her cancer. Her tumor markers decreased, and the lymph node shrank.
Her experience reinforces an important reminder: sometimes the right test can open the door to additional treatment options.
As Laura says,
"Your labs are the language of your body."
Understanding that language allows you to have more meaningful conversations with your healthcare team.
2. Integrative Care Doesn't Have to Be Either/Or
Laura is quick to point out that standard cancer treatment saved her life.
She is equally grateful for the lifestyle, nutrition, metabolic, and supportive therapies that have helped her maintain her quality of life throughout treatment.
For her, it was never about choosing conventional care or natural approaches.
It was about thoughtfully integrating both.
Today, her healthcare team includes a medical oncologist alongside practitioners who help support her overall health throughout treatment.
Each brings different expertise. Together, they help her make informed decisions.
Laura encourages patients to keep all members of their healthcare team informed about the treatments, supplements, and therapies they are using so everyone can work together safely and effectively.
3. Be the CEO of Your Health
Perhaps the most memorable message from the conversation is the idea that patients should see themselves as the CEO of their own healthcare team.
Your doctors are experts.
Your practitioners are experts.
But you're the person living with the diagnosis.
Being the CEO means asking questions.
It means understanding why a treatment is being recommended.
It means seeking second opinions when necessary.
And if advocating for yourself feels overwhelming, bring someone you trust to appointments who can help ask questions and take notes.
As Laura explains, advocacy isn't about confrontation. It's about collaboration.
The best healthcare relationships are built on mutual respect, open communication, and shared decision-making.
Hope Begins with Knowledge
Cancer can make you feel as though you've lost control.
Education helps restore it.
Understanding your options doesn't mean you have to pursue every treatment or every test. It simply allows you to make informed decisions with your healthcare team based on your unique situation and goals.
That is what becoming the CEO of your health is all about.
