Skin Deep and Whole-Body Strong: Why Clean Skincare Matters for Metabolic Health
When we talk about metabolic health, we often focus on food, movement, sleep, stress, and environmental exposures.
But there is another important part of the conversation that is often overlooked: what we put on our skin.
Your skin is your largest organ. It plays a vital role in absorption, elimination, detoxification, immune defense, and your body’s daily interaction with the world around you.
What you put on your skin matters.
That was the focus of a recent conversation with Andy Hnilo, founder of Alitura and a valued sponsor of the Metabolic Health Day Conference. His personal healing journey led him to create a globally recognized line of non-toxic, bioactive skincare products—but his story is about much more than skincare.
It is about resilience, recovery, and the powerful connection between skin health and whole-body health.
The video version of this conversation with Andy can be found at the end of this post.
A Personal Journey from Pain to Purpose
Andy’s path began long before he launched a skincare company.
As a young athlete on a baseball scholarship at UC Berkeley, he worked hard to gain weight and compete at a high level. But the approach he took—focused on calories and convenience—took a toll on his body, especially his skin. He developed severe cystic acne and painful back acne that deeply affected his confidence.
In searching for answers, he began paying closer attention to what he was putting both in and on his body. He moved away from heavily processed skincare products, simplified his routine, and made changes to his diet.
The shift was enough to spark something deeper: curiosity.
That curiosity became even more meaningful after a life-altering accident in 2011, when Andy was struck by a vehicle and suffered devastating injuries, including a fractured jaw, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung.
During his recovery, he began experimenting—using clays, botanicals, minerals, and nutrient-dense ingredients to support healing from the inside out.
What started in his kitchen as a personal effort to restore his skin and confidence eventually became Alitura.
Why Skin Health Belongs in the Metabolic Conversation
At MTIH, we talk often about the terrain—the internal and external environment that shapes health.
Your skin is part of that terrain.
It is not simply cosmetic. It is active. It is protective. It is responsive. And it plays a role in detoxification, immune function, and inflammation regulation.
When we consistently expose the skin to synthetic fragrances, preservatives, dyes, and chemical fillers, we may be adding to the body’s overall burden in ways we don’t always recognize.
Clean skincare is not about perfection.
It is about reducing unnecessary load and supporting the body’s natural resilience.
Andy shared a perspective that stayed with us:
We should treat the skin like another mouth.
In other words, we can begin asking the same question we ask with food:
Is this something my body recognizes and can work with?
What to Watch For
One of the most practical takeaways from the conversation was the importance of awareness.
Andy encouraged a simple habit: “grab and turn.”
Pick up the product. Turn it over. Read the label.
Some of the most common ingredients he recommends being mindful of include:
Fragrance
Sodium benzoate
Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate
Parabens
Phthalates
Synthetic dyes
Harsh foaming agents
Unnecessary fillers and emulsifiers
Certain alcohols
Soy-based glycerin
Microplastics
This is not about fear—it’s about understanding.
Because when you understand what’s in your products, you can begin making more intentional choices.
Returning to What Has Always Worked
One of the most meaningful parts of Andy’s work is how it reconnects us to ingredients that have been used for generations.
Bentonite clay.
Manuka honey.
Frankincense.
Myrrh.
Beeswax.
Sea buckthorn.
Calendula.
These are not trends. They are traditions.
And what we are seeing now is a return—bringing these time-tested ingredients into modern formulations, with care, sourcing integrity, and intention.
This is something we see across many areas of metabolic health:
often, the path forward includes remembering what has worked all along.
Skincare as a Moment of Care
Another theme that emerged in this conversation was the idea of skincare as a ritual.
Not something rushed. Not something driven by pressure.
But something that can become a moment to slow down, reconnect, and care for your body.
Even something as simple as applying a clay mask can become a small act of restoration.
And those moments matter.
Because healing is not built in a single decision.
It is built in small, consistent choices made over time.
A Simple Approach
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by skincare, the takeaway here is not to do more—it’s to simplify.
A supportive routine can be as simple as:
Cleanse. Exfoliate. Hydrate. Repair.
And just as importantly: choose products where the ingredients serve a purpose.
The Bigger Picture
This conversation is part of a larger shift.
A shift toward asking better questions.
A shift toward reducing unnecessary exposures.
A shift toward supporting the body, rather than working against it.
Metabolic health is not just about one thing. It is about the accumulation of daily choices—what we eat, how we move, how we rest, what we are exposed to, and how we care for our bodies.
Skincare is one piece of that picture.
And for many people, it is a simple place to begin.
